Japanese Class
EngIO Japanese Class is designed to support students, researchers and faculty members in the School of Engineering, Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, Graduate School of Information Sciences, and Graduate School of Environmental Studies in order to promote more interest in the Japanese language while helping them have a smoother, meaningful life both on-campus and off-campus.
These courses will give no credits, however, if you wish, we can issue a certificate of attendance for you. For international exchange students, you may apply for credit transfer by submitting the certificate to your home university.
These courses are free of charge.

How to Attend
Register via the Application Form by October 26th, 2022.
Each class has its Google Classroom. The classroom code will be emailed to the applicants.
*The “Tohokudai ID” is required to apply.
Tohokudai ID is a secured IT account provided by Tohoku University to those who are admitted to Tohoku University, and is different from the student ID number. If you have not been provided the Tohokudai ID yet, please ask your host laboratory. It usually takes time to be provided, depending on the schedule of committee that approves your admission and internal procedures, etc.

“GENKI 1” Supplementary Materials

Outline
This is the grammar explanations and exercises supplementary material of the GENKI textbook. Even those who do not have the textbook can follow the “Conversation and Grammar” section along with the contents of the textbook (the “Reading and Writing” section is not included).
This textbook follows the story of Mary, an international student living in Japan, and her friends and acquaintances at a Japanese university. You will learn basic sentence patterns and structures while using a lot of vocabulary and phrases useful for university life in Japan.
Class Style
This is an on-demand supplementary material. There are slides of each chapter on the Google Classroom so that you can progress at your own pace during the semester.

Beginner Class

Outline
This class is designed for beginners in learning Japanese. In this class, you will learn basic vocabulary and expressions that are useful for daily life in Japan using various textbooks or materials and doing some quize and exercises of letters (Hiragana and Katakana), phrases, etc. sometimes. One of the main aims of this class is to develop motivation to continue learning Japanese.
Class Style
Online live lesson (Zoom). A Google account other than Tohokudai ID is needed to attend this class.
* Please join the Google Classroom by October 29th. There is an announcement for the first lesson.
* If the number of students is small, the class may be held face-to-face. In that case, the classroom will be the International Office (2nd floor of the Engineering Center Hall in Aobayama Campus).

Outline
In this class, you will mainly use “IRODORI A2” textbook and also some websites and resources such as Sendai’s local internet news (Kahoku Shimpo) to cover the wide-ranged topics relating to the real lives of Japanese language learners. The class is designed to mainly improve “Speaking” and “Reading” skills that are useful for the laboratory communication and future job hunting.
